McMaster Units

Black Student Success Centre (BSSC) The Black Student Success Centre is dedicated to supporting and championing the holistic (academic, personal and professional) success and overall well-being of Black/African descent students and fostering a positive Black student and athlete experience. The Centre is a safe space where students can meet, share, socialize and access specialized support and services.

Campus Safety Services The primary responsibility for the protection of persons and property within the McMaster community is assigned to the Campus Safety Services department.

Child Care Centre The Child Care Centre is a service of the McMaster Students Union which provides educational care for the McMaster student community as well as the community at large.

Emergency First Response Team (EFRT) EFRT is a group of student volunteers who provide emergency medical services to the McMaster Campus, with an average response time of 2-3 minutes.

Employee and Labour Relations The Employee/Labour Relations Team provides proactive and strategic employee/labour relations guidance, advice and recommendations in line with employment legislation, collective agreements and University policies.

Employment Equity (Human Resources) Employment equity is defined as an ongoing process that identifies and eliminates barriers to an organization’s employment procedures and policies. It includes establishing proactive employment practices to address systemic barriers to ensure appropriate representation of designated group members throughout a workforce.

Employee Health and Wellbeing Employee Health and Well-being is available to assist you maximize the relationship between your job and your health.

Equity and Inclusion Office (EIO) EIO is a central resource for faculty, staff, and students to advance equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility goals; to enact inclusive excellence principles; and to establish respectful living, learning, and working environments that are free from harassment and discrimination, and sexual violence including through timely and procedurally fair investigative and alternative dispute resolution processes.

Food Collective Centre The Food Collective Centre is McMaster’s on-campus food bank and food security resource.

Human Rights Dispute Resolution Office Housed in EIO, HRDR Provides consultation for any students, staff, faculty, and other members of the University community on issues related to human rights; acts as an Intake Office for formal complaints of discrimination, harassment or sexual violence; oversees and, where required, investigates formal complaints lodged under the University’s Discrimination & Harassment Policy and/or the Sexual Violence Policy; and, when requested, facilitates resolution of concerns and complaints using alternate dispute resolution practices.

Indigenous Education Council (IEC) McMaster’s Indigenous Education Council is the primary body with responsibility for promoting and advocating for the advancement of Indigenous education at McMaster, championing the needs of Indigenous students, staff and faculty members, and providing advice and support to the University on all Indigenous matters.

Indigenous Student Services (ISS) ISS provides support and shares opportunities for all Indigenous students at McMaster.

MacPherson Institute offers a wide variety of programs, workshops, services and supports to all members of the McMaster community to cultivate an environment where learning deeply matters, and teaching is valued and recognized, including extensive inclusive teaching and learning resources.

Office of Community Engagement (OCE) OCE supports community engagement in a range of ways for faculty, staff, and students.

Ombuds With a focus on fairness, the McMaster Ombuds Office helps visitors better understand their concerns and possible ways to address them.

President’s Advisory Committee for Building an Inclusive Community (PACBIC) The President’s Advisory Committee on Building an Inclusive Community (PACBIC) aims to identify and anticipate issues affecting equity-seeking communities both within the University and relevant to those seeking access to the University, and to advise the President on such issues.

Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO) Housed within EIO, SVPRO supports all McMaster community members with inclusive and trauma-informed response and support, prevention education and response training, and community consultation and referral.

Student Accessibility Services (SAS) SAS is dedicated to supporting students with disabilities through academic accommodations and related supports at McMaster.

Student Case Management (SCM) provides a one-stop service that aims to support the whole student. By caring for students who are in distress, or experiencing difficulty, in a holistic way, our office recognizes that students’ well-being is a function of their diverse individual identities and experiences in relation to their social environment and situation.

Student Success Centre The Student Success Centre hosts a wide range of programs that support student success.

Student Wellness Centre (not available to MBA students–MBA students see below resources) The Student Wellness Centre provides a range of counselling services, medical care, and wellness programs to help students thrive both academically and personally at McMaster.

Crisis Supports

Call 911 to access emergency support via ambulance, firetruck, or police.

Crisis Outreach and Support Team (COAST) Available 24/7, COAST provides services to people experiencing a crisis related to mental health and addictions. Call 905-972-8338.

Good2Talk Available 24/7, Good2Talk provides free, confidential support services for post-secondary students in Ontario. Call 1-866-925-5454 or see the website for other support options, such as via text.


Off-Campus Supports

Crisis Outreach and Support Team (COAST) Available 24/7, COAST provides services to people experiencing a crisis related to mental health and addictions.

Disability Justice Network of Ontario (DJNO) The Disability Justice Network of Ontario (DJNO) aims to build a just and accessible Ontario, wherein disabled people have personal and political agency; can thrive and foster community; and can build the power, capacity, and skills needed to hold people, communities, and institutions responsible for the spaces they create​.

Food Bank Directory The Food Access Guide lists places in Hamilton, Ontario where health and social service providers can refer clients to receive free or low-cost food.

Hamilton Anti-Racism Resource Centre The Hamilton Anti-Racism Resource Centre (HARRC) is committed to advancing education about race, racism, discrimination, racial equality, and anti-racist theory and practice in Hamilton.

Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion (HCCI) Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion is a charitable organization driven by a mission to mobilize all Hamiltonians to create an inclusive and welcoming city.

Hamilton Community Legal Clinic (HCLC) – HCLC is a community based not for profit agency whose diverse team of caring professionals and volunteers provides legal services to low income individuals and communities to promote access to justice and to improve quality of life. Services available in French and English

Justice for Children and Youth (JFCY) Provides legal services available for youth up to 25 years old for homeless and undocumented youth in Ontario.

Sexual Assault Centre Hamilton (SACHA) Our ser­vices are free, non-judge­men­tal and based on the belief that sur­vivors are the experts of their own experiences.


McMaster Groups and Student Clubs with Diversity Focus

African-Caribbean Faculty Association of McMaster University (ACFAM) ACFAM was established in 2010 with objectives to raise awareness about the shortage of Black academics at McMaster and other Canadian universities, and encourage hiring faculty of Black and other diverse communities; provide an organizational base for networking, promotion and advancement of Black academics at McMaster; foster academic and research collaborations among our members; and mentor and support Black undergraduate and graduate students at McMaster.

Black-Focused Student Groups on Campus A list of student groups for Black students.

DeGroote Black in Business To empower, elevate, and educate Black-identifying students at McMaster University.

DeGroote MBA EDI Committee is focused on achieving institution-wide equity, diversity and inclusivity at DeGroote.

DeGroote Pride Association (DPA) provides a safe and educational space for both 2SLGBTQIA+ students and allies of the DeGroote School of Business.

DeGroote Women in Business The motive of DeGroote Women in Business (DWIB) is to fully engage, motivate and empower female-identifying business students through business education and experience.

Latin American Network at McMaster University (LANMU) The LANMU was established in the summer of 2021 and is composed of students, staff, and faculty who have various ties to Latin America and its diasporas.

MSU Clubs Directory A directory of all MSU clubs, some of which are focused on EDI.

MSU Diversity + Equity Network (DEN) exists in order to celebrate, unite, and advocate with the variety of diverse groups on campus within the realm of race, ethnicity, culture, faith, and Indigenous affairs. In order to accomplish this, we help to plan, support and promote events that allow McMaster students to fully experience the differences that make our campus unique.

MSU Pride Community Centre (PCC) is a student-run service provided by the MSU that aims to challenge oppressive social attitudes and norms, patriarchy, homo/trans/bi/lesbophobia, and the like, at the systemic level.

Black Student Mentorship Program The Black Student Mentorship Program (BSMP) was established in 2020 to create community among Black students and faculty at McMaster.

Spiritual Care and Learning via Student Success Centre The Spiritual Care and Learning Centre (SCLC) is a multicultural network of community leaders and groups working in collaboration to provide spiritual care services.

Student Wellness Centre Programming The Student Wellness Centre has a wide variety of programs designed to cater to the wellness needs of the student population.


EDI Trainings

EDI Fundamentals The EDIA Fundamentals module is an asynchronous 5-part module, designed by the Equity, Diversity and Anti-Oppression Program within McMaster’s Equity and Inclusion Office, to provide the community with an accessible, self-paced learning about EDIA, Anti-Racism, and Anti-Oppression with a spot light on Anti-Black Racism in Higher Education.

Hippo-on-Campus This program teaches faculty, staff, teaching assistants, graduate students, and student leaders at McMaster University about student mental health and how to support students in a way that suits their role.

Indigenous Canada Indigenous Canada is a free 12-lesson Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta that explores the different histories and contemporary perspectives of Indigenous peoples living in Canada.

It Takes All of Us It Takes All of Us (CONSENT 1A00/SGS 202) is an online learning module that increases awareness of gender-based and sexual violence and fosters a campus culture of respect and consent.

Responding to Disclosures of Sexual Violence This free training includes 7 modules with video scenarios, practice quizzes and links to important resources to help you respond supportively and effectively to disclosures of sexual violence on campus.

Land Acknowledgements A guidance document from the Student Success Centre to support the McMaster community in delivering land acknowledgements.

Library Accessibility Services supports the university community with alternate formats for those who need them, accessible study spaces and technology to support students, staff, and faculty with disabilities in their coursework and research, and other services.

Luminary is Canada’s leading Indigenous innovation and economic collaboration hub, connecting research organizations, post-secondary institutions, business schools, agriculture schools, and other faculties with Indigenous businesses, innovators, and communities, and DeGroote School of Business is a founding member.
